Family says they are receiving threats from the man who raped the girl

A fifth grader girl was raped and the foetus conceived of the rape was aborted by the alleged rapist’s family in Tarparchundi union of Chandpur Sadar upazila.

Police on Monday afternoon arrested Jahangir, 40, who reportedly raped the 12 year old girl.

According to the girl's family, she was four months pregnant before an abortion was conducted.

The girl is a fifth grader student of Abdul Awal Government Primary School located in Chandpur Sadar.

The girl's mother on Friday said: "My daughter was raped many times by Jahangir tailor. She told me of the incident after I saw physical changes in her. We were threatened so that the incident was suppressed.

"The tailor’s wife later took my girl to a hospital in Chandpur town and aborted the foetus. I have informed the matter to ward no 8 member Ruhul Amin Sukdar, ward no 9 member Mostofa Mal and other locals.

"But we are helpless, we were threatened so that we don't file a case. I want justice delivered to the rapist.”

The girl said she was first raped in an isolated place after the man lured her when she was playing near her house. After that she was threatened and was raped a few other times.

Ward no 8 Member Ruhul Amin Shikdar couldn't be reached for comment when he was contacted over the phone a few times.

Tarpurchandi Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Imam Hasan Rasel Gazi on Saturday said the girl's family has not informed the matter to him. "I learned the matter a couple of days ago. Although the incident (abortion) took place 15 days ago, ward members kept the matter hidden from me.”

Confirming that Jahangir was arrested, Chandpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar circle) Zahed Parvez Chowdhury said: "We have assured the victim and her family that legal protection would be provided to them. We suggested them to file a case.

"The detained man will be produced before court as soon as a complaint is filed," added ASP Zahed.
