RAB arrests 2 along with car used for Regent Group boss Shahed’s escape

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested two people for allegedly helping Shahed, the Regent Group boss, to stay out of the reach of law enforcement. Shahed was allegedly involved in issuing fake Covid-19 certificates and embezzling money from patients.

The arrested are Giash Uddin Jalal, 61, a brother-in-law of Regent Group Managing Director Masud Parvez’s spouse, and Mahmudul Hasan, 40, the driver.

The RAB team recovered a car which was used to take Shahed from Dhaka to other areas of the country while he was on the run, along with 48 cheques signed by the Regent Group chairman and some other official seals.

Inside the car, RAB found 2,120 pieces of yaba and 10 bottles of phensedyl.

Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, RAB Director (legal and media wing) Lt Col Ashik Billah said the two were arrested from Ashulia’s Narsinghpur area on Thursday evening.

Ashik said the car was rented by Giash, adding that Shahed used the car to flee following the raid which was carried out at the two branches of Regent Hospital by RAB.

Shahed and Masud Parvez are already in police custody.

The Regent Group Chairman Md Shahed alias Shahed Karim was arrested on July 15, two days after a Dhaka court issued an arrest warrant against him in two cases filed over misappropriation of Tk3.68 crore.

He has been on the run since RAB raided the Uttara and Mirpur branches of Regent Hospital.
