Mother, son among five electrocuted to death in Tangail

Five bodies were recovered from the spot and it is believed that there were other passengers on the boat who are still missing

Five people, including a woman and her son, met tragic fates as they were electrocuted to death while travelling on a boat. The incident took place in Gilabari bazar area under Basail upazila of Tangail on Friday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as boatman Taiz Uddin, 50, Jamela Begum, 60, her son Hamidur Rahman, 35, Shah Alom, 25, and another woman whose name is yet to be confirmed, confirmed Basail police station Officer-in-Charge Harun Or Rashid.

“The victims came in contact with a live electric wire which presumably fell into the water from a nearby electric pole,” said the police official.

“Five bodies were recovered from the spot and it is believed that there were other passengers on the boat who are still missing,” said Rubel Miya, a member of the local union council.

Basail Fire Service Station Fireman Shafiqul Islam said divers have been sent to the spot to conduct a search operation.
