After a search of the victim's vehicle police said to have found 50 yaba pills, some marijuana and two bottles of foreign liquor
A former army officer was shot dead by police for reportedly obstructing police work in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar.
The incident took place on Marine Drive Road in Baharchhara of the upazila around 10:30pm on Friday.
The victim was identified as Sinha Md Rashed Khan, a former major in the Bangladesh Army.
Cox's Bazar Superintendent of Police ABM Masud Hossain confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
He said: “Acting on a tip-off, Teknaf police set up a check post on Marine Drive looking to bust suspected robbers onboard a vehicle. When police stopped the former army officer’s vehicle and tried to search it, he pulled a gun on the police personnel, prompting the police to shoot him in self-defence.”
The critically injured victim was rushed to the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, he added.
Dr Shaheen Abdur Rahman, resident medical officer at Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital, said the victim had succumbed to his gunshot injury before he was brought to the hospital at 2am Friday. "The victim's autopsy has been completed."
Two people have been arrested and the victim’s firearm has been seized. Meanwhile, two cases have been filed with the police station in this regard.
The SP also said that after a search of the vehicle police found 50 yaba pills, some marijuana and two bottles of foreign liquor.
