BSF men patrolling the border opened fire on some cattle rustlers injuring Akhirul Islam, who then died on his way to a hospital
A Bangladeshi cattle trader has been shot dead allegedly by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at Rowmari border in Kurigram.
The incident took place at Majherchar area of Char Italukanda village near 1052-53 Main Pillar in the remote Datbhanga union early Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Akhirul Islam, 22, a cattle rustler from Rowmari.
Datbhanga Union Parishad Chairman Shamsul Hoque confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.
Quoting local sources, he said: “Locals heard two sounds of gunshot across the border near the incident spot; one at 9:30pm and the other at 1:30am Tuesday. There was no news of casualties after the first gunshot was heard but after the second one, we heard Akhirul had died.
According to local sources, several cattle traders from Bangladesh crossed the border into India Tuesday night. In the early hours of Wednesday, BSF men patrolling the Alga camp in Assam opened fire on them as they were coming through the 1052-53 Main Pillar area of the border with the cows. Akhirul Islam was shot by the BSF. Later his companions took him to a hospital but he died on the way.
“Akhirul’s family fled soon after burying Akhirul’s body, probably to avoid legal proceedings,” added the UP chairman.
Meanwhile, Border Guard Bangladesh Battalion 35 Commander Lt Col SM Azad could not be reached over the phone for his comment regarding the incident.
