Brahmaputra-Jamuna water to be steady in a day

The overall flood situation has further improved in the Ganges basin due to dwindling of water level in many of its rivers in the last couple of days

Flood situation would be stable in the Brahmaputra basin within a day, said the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) in a bulletin on Friday morning.

The Brahmaputra River is in steady state, while the Jamuna River is in rising trend. Both the Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers may remain steady in the next 24 hours, the bulletin said.

The Ganges River water level continues to fall and the Padma River is in stable state, which may remain in similar trend in the next 24 hours.

The rivers of the upper Meghna basin in the country’s north-eastern region are in falling trend, which it may recede in the next 24 hours, according to the daily bulletin.

The overall flood situation has further improved in the Ganges basin due to dwindling of water level in many of its rivers in the last couple of days, our Rajshahi correspondent reports.

Of 30 river points monitored in the Ganges basin today, water levels receded at 17 points while went up at 11 points and remained stable at two other points in the last 24 hours ending at 9am on Friday.

Besides, the rivers were flowing below the danger level at 29 points, while above the danger level at one point this morning.

A declining trend of water was recorded at all the four points of the Ganges River and some other points of Padma River this morning, superintending engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) Mukhlesur Rahman told BSS.

Water level of the Ganges River decreased by 8cm each at Pankha point in Chapainawabganj and at Hardinge Bridge point respectively, 9cm at Rajshahi point and remained stable at Talbaria point.

The Ganges River was flowing 199 cm, 212 cm, 131 cm and 113 cm below the danger levels at Pankha, Rajshahi, Hardinge Bridge, and Talbaria points respectively, while the Padma River was flowing three cm below the danger mark with a two-cm rise afresh at Goalundo point, Mukhlesur said.

Water level of the Korotoa River was reported a rising trend afresh at Chak Rahimpur, while it was in a falling trend at Bogra point, and the river was flowing 125 cm below the danger level at Chak Rahimpur point with a 14 m rise. The river was flowing 254 cm below the danger mark at Bogura point with a six-cm fall this morning.

A rising trend of water was recorded at all the three points of the Jamuna River and its water level increased by 10 cm at Sariakandi point in Bogra, 6 cm at Kazipur point and 11 cm at Sirajgonj point, the BWDB officials said.

But, the river was still flowing 12 cm, 33 cm and 24 cm below the danger level at the three points respectively at 9 am.

The Gur River was flowing 12 cm above the danger level at Singra point in Natore with a three-cm fall afresh.

The Atrai River was flowing 56 cm below the danger mark at Atrai point in Naogaon with a 17-cm rise afresh while 273 cm below the danger mark with a 16-cm rise at Mohadevpur point in Naogaon.
