A woman was shot dead and her young son injured by unidentified miscreants in a reported act of regional gang violence in Dighinala upazila of Khagrachhari early Saturday.
Police and family members identified the victim as Morsheda Begum, wife of Abdul Malek, president of Sona Miya Hill Conservation Committee.
The shooting also left Morsheda's 10-year-old son Md Ahad injured, who is currently undergoing treatment at Dighinala Upazila Health Complex.
According to local sources, unknown miscreants indiscriminately shot at Abdul Malek's home in the early hours of Saturday, leaving Morsheda and her son Ahad injured. When they were rescued to the Dighinala Upazila Health Complex, Morsheda was declared dead.
Confirming the matter, Khagrachhari Superintendent of Police Abdul Aziz said: "We primarily suspect that one of the regional crime gangs might have carried out the shooting in order to establish dominance in the area."
Police will take necessary action after an investigation into the incident, he added.
