Philippines national dies falling from ship in Chittagong port

The seaman slipped when he was closing the hatch cover of the ship. He died on his way to Chittagong Medical College Hospital

A foreign ship crew died, falling from a ship in Chittagong port on Monday noon.

The crew member was identified as Joel D Baranda, 35, a Philippines national.

Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Deputy Conservator of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), Captain Faridul Alam, said the accident occurred on Monday noon when Joel Baranda fell from the ship ‘MV Talia H’ anchored at No.4 Jetty of the port.

“The crew member slipped when he was closing the hatch cover of the ship. Critically injured, he was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). 

However, the on-duty doctor pronounced him dead on arrival,” said Captain Alam.   

“The body is now at CMCH. There are some formalities to complete to send the body to the Philippines from Bangladesh,” added the CPA official.
