By-polls to Pabna 4 seat are scheduled to be held on September 26.
At least 10 people were injured as two rival groups of the ruling Awami League clashed over issues centering on the upcoming Pabna-4 by polls in Iswardi municipality in Pabna on Monday morning.
The clashes erupted between supporters of municipality unit president mayor Abul Kalam Azad and acting general secretary Ishaq Malitha over taking control of Iswardi municipality Awami League Office.
Among the injured were municipality unit president mayor Abul Kalam Azad, general secretary Ishaq Malitha, Bakkar Malitha, president of Muladuli union Krishok League and Roni, son of Abdus Salam Mandal, acting chairman of Iswardi upazila parishad.
Roni was sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment as he was hit on the head with sharp weapons. Police were deployed in the area to prevent any further untoward situation.
Regarding the matter, Iswardi police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Nasir Uddin said:” A scuffle ensued when leaders and activists were welcoming SM Kamal Hossain , organizing secretary of Bangladesh Awami League, and former Home Minister Shamsul Haque Tuku.
“As a sequel to this incident, the clashes took place. But the situation is now under control. Additional police were deployed in the area.” the police official added.
Nuruzzaman Biswas, chairman of Ishwardi upazila and vice president of Pabna district Awami League, has been given the party nomination for the Pabna 4 by-polls.
The by-election to the Pabna 4 seat is scheduled to be held on September 26.
