The human chain organized by the district's Crab Traders Association took place on Satkhira Kailganj Highway in Shakhipur
Demanding resumption of crab exports to China, farmers and traders formed a human chain in Satkhira’s Debhata upazila on Tuesday.
The human chain organized by the district's Crab Traders Association took place on Satkhira Kailganj Highway in Shakhipur at around 11am.
The traders and farmers at the human chain demanded that administrative issues involving crab exports to China be resolved soon so they can once again export crabs to China and survive the financial crisis brought on by Covid-19.
They said every year crabs worth around Tk 2,000 crore were exported to China. But due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the export of crabs and eels has been at a standstill for five months.
The government is losing hundreds of crores of revenue while families involved with the business are going through financial hardship, they said.
The protesting crab farmers and traders urged the government to protect the crab industry by facilitating the resumption of exports to China.
The human chain was presided over by Saiful Islam, president of Satkhira Crab Traders Association.
