Satkhira Nagorik Committee, a local civil society body, submitted a memorandum with 10,887 signatures to the Prime Minister on Tuesday to press home its demands, including renovation of damaged embankments.

The members of the committee along with locals handed over the memorandum to Satkhira Deputy Commissioner Mostafa Kamal at around 1pm after a human chain was formed before the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

Md Anisur Rahim, convener of Satkhira district Nagorik Committee, presided over the human chain.

The speakers at the human chain said people of coastal areas, including Satkhira, had been going through immense sufferings since Cyclone Amphan hit the southern district with ferocious winds and rain.

Houses and roads were being inundated everyday by the tidal surges as embankments had collapsed. Residents of Boddipur, Itagacha and Katia Mathpara in Satkhira town had been living in knee-deep water due to waterlogging, they said.

The speakers demanded that a coordinated project be undertaken after conducting a survey in coastal areas, including Satkhira, Khulna and Bagerhat, to resolve the problems of river erosion and waterlogging.
