'His oxygen saturation has fallen and he is now in an unconscious state'
Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi, chief of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, has been moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) after his condition deteriorated Friday afternoon.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, CMCH Director Brig Gen SM Humayun Kabir said that the ailing cleric was admitted to the ICU at 1:30am on Friday.
“He is now in a critical state. We have already formed a medical board for his treatment. His family members have decided to take him to Dhaka by air ambulance for better treatment,” said the CMCH Director.

CMCH Deputy Director Dr Aftabul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune that Shafi is likely to be airlifted to Dhaka at 4pm on Friday.
“His oxygen saturation has fallen. He is now in an unconscious state,” added Dr Islam.
The nonagenarian spiritual leader, also called Boro Hujur (the eldest scholar) by his followers, has long been suffering from different old-age complications including diabetes and high blood pressure and low sodium level.
On Thursday, Shah Ahmad Shafi, resigned from the post of director general (DG) of Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam, popularly known as Hathazari Madrasa in Chittagong, in the face of student protests.
