Police on Monday recovered the body of an Indian worker hanging from a bridge at the Rampal power plant in Bagerhat.
The deceased, identified as Parbat Singh, 37, hailed from India’s Punjab state, said Rampal police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Monjurul Alom.
Quoting workers, OC Monjurul said that Parbat Singh went out of his barracks at around 3am on Monday while he was talking with his family members over Whatsapp. He did not return to the barracks that night.
Local residents discovered a dead body, which turned out to be Parbat Singh’s, on a bridge of Sapmari khal (canal) beside Rampal power plant at around 10am on Monday. Being informed by locals, officials of the power plant reached the scene and identified the body of Parbat Singh, the OC said.
“Later police recovered the dead body. We suspect Parbat Sing might have committed suicide. The dead body was sent to Bagerhat Hospital for autopsy,” the police official added.
The Rampal power plant is a proposed 1320 megawatt coal-fired power station in Rampal upazila of Bagerhat district in Khulna division. It is a joint partnership between India's state-owned National Thermal Power Corporation and Bangladesh Power Development Board. Currently, 1802 foreigners are working at the power station, including 21 Chinese and 1344 Indian workers.
