Flood situation deteriorates in Ganges, Brahmaputra basins

The rivers were flowing below the danger level in 10 points, while above the danger mark at another six points on Tuesday

The overall flood situation in the Ganges and Brahmaputra basins have deteriorated further with inundation of fresh low-lying areas and standing crops in the Brahmaputra basin during the last 24 hours.

Of the 16 river points both in Ganges and Brahmaputra Basins, being monitored in many districts under Rajshahi division regularly, water levels increased at 15 points, while declined at one point.

The rivers were flowing below the danger level in 10 points, while above the danger mark at another six points on Tuesday.

At Rangpur, Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) officials said the Brahmaputra, Jamuna, Ghagot, Jamuneswari and Kartoa marked further rise while Dharla and Teesta fell due to onrush of water from upstream despite no rainfalls during the last 24 hours in the basin.

According to the BWDB’s Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre’s flood situation bulletin, water levels of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna river systems are in rising trend which may continue in next 24 hours in the Brahmaputra basin.

Department of Agricultural Extension Acting Additional Director for Rangpur region Md Moniruzzaman said standing crops on 48,501 hectares of land submerged in all five districts of Rangpur agriculture region alone till Tuesday morning.

The current deluge has so far submerged standing crops on 18,330 hectares of land in Rangpur, 6,685 hectares in Gaibandha, 18,500 hectares in Kurigram, 1,356 hectares in Nilphamari and 3,630 hectares of land in Lalmonirhat districts of the region.

Kurigram District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer (DRRO) Abdul Hye said 85 tons of rice, 2,000 packets of dry foods, Tk1 lakh for baby foods and Tk4 lakh for animal fodders continues to be distributed among the flood-hit people.

Meanwhile in Rajshahi, flood condition at Ganges basin deteriorated again as water level in most of its rivers and tributaries recorded a continuous rising trend for the last couple of days because of onrushing of floodwater from the upstream hilly catchment areas.

Of the 30 river points, monitored in the Ganges basin on Tuesday, water levels increased at 15 points, while receded at 13 points and remained stable at two other points, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).

However, the rivers were still flowing below the danger level at 25 points, while above the danger level at five other points today like the previous day.

Local office of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) recorded a rising trend at all the eight points in the Ganges and the Padma Rivers today for the third consecutive day, BWDB Superintending Engineer Mukhlesur Rahman told BSS.

As part of its instant humanitarian assistance to cope with the catastrophic situation, the government has, by now, allocated 1,679.1 tons of rice, Taka 43.55 lakh in cash, 20,380 packets of dry-food, Tk23 lakh for baby food and Tk40 lakh for animal feed.

Simultaneously, the Department of Health has undertaken all possible measures to prevent any outbreak of water-borne diseases among the flood affected people amidst the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

Some 5,863 patients were reported to have suffered from various water-related diseases and 25 people died with flood related incidents, particularly drowning and snakebite since July 1, sources said.
