A legal notice has been served on Khagrachhari deputy commissioner (DC) to learn what steps he has taken to prevent the trend of rape that has caused turmoil his district of late.
Supreme Court lawyer advocate Nicolash Chakma sent the legal notice on Wednesday and said that he will file a writ with the High Court if the DC fails to inform of the steps he has taken to ensure overall security of the district within 15 days.
Citing the notice, four rapes took place in a month in the district. Police have already arrested seven alleged rapists with evidence and they have also confessed to their crimes. But such incidents of the past have not been adjudicated till date.
The notice also said, as the district administrator, the DC has the responsibility to maintain law and order in the district, security of the people, and freedom of movement. But the DC has repeatedly failed to protect the lives and property of the people.

On Wednesday afternoon, prime suspect of a gang rape and robbery case, Nurul Amin, was produced before the Khagrachhari Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court.
Judge Sejuti Jannat put Nurul on a two-day remand after police prayed to the court to for a seven-day remand, confirmed Muhammad Rashid, officer-in-charge (OC) of Khagrachhari Sadar police station.
Earlier, police arrested seven out of the nine men accused in a case filed by the woman’s mother later that day.
On Sunday, six arrestees except Nurul, confessed to their crimes before the same magistrate’s court.
Police say eight of the nine men, who robbed the family and raped the woman with disability, were accused in multiple cases filed over different charges, including rape, robbery, and firearms.
These men met and got acquainted in prison. They carried out robberies in different areas after coming out of prison on bail. They had also planned to rob this family on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Tripura Students Forum and Bangladesh Marma Students’ Council have been demonstrating in Khagrachhari town demanding justice for all rape survivors in the district and for exemplary punishment of the perpetrators.
