Flooding recedes in the Ganges basin

Flood improves in Korotoa, Ghaghot basins

The overall flood situation in the Ganges basin has improved for the second consecutive day as water levels in many of its rivers and tributaries recorded a falling trend in the last 24-hour period ending on Monday morning.

Of the 30 river points, monitored in the Ganges basin, water levels receded at 23 points, while increased at five points and remained steady at two other points, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).

The rivers were flowing below the danger level at 28 points, and above the danger level at two other points on Monday.

Local office of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) recorded a falling trend at all the eight points except one of the Ganges and the Padma rivers, Mukhlesur Rahman, Superintending Engineer of BWDB, told BSS.

Water level in the Ganges river further receded by 17cm at Pankha in Chapainawabganj, 18cm each at Rajshahi and at Hardinge Bridge and 13cm at Talbaria points afresh respectively.

Water level in the Korotoa River increased by 2cm at Bogra point and receded by 16cm at Chak Rahimpur point afresh. The Korotoa river was still flowing 88cm above the danger level at Chak Rahimpur point on Monday morning.

FFWC Executive Engineer Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan said a falling trend has been recorded at all the six points of the Jamuna river for the last couple of days.

The Jamuna River receded by 31cm, 22cm and 27cm at Sariakandi in Bogra, at Kazipur in Sirajganj and at Sirajganj points respectively.

The Gur river receded by 11cm in its Shingra point in Natore afresh but still flowing 18cm above the danger mark. The Atrai River remained stable at Baghabari in Sirajganj flowing 15cm above the danger level.

The Mahananda River increased by 1cm at Rohanpur, while receded by 7cm at Chapainawabganj points afresh.

Of the 16 river points both in Ganges and Brahmaputra Basins, being monitored in many districts under Rajshahi division regularly, water levels increased at three points, while declined at 13 points and remained stable at one point.

The rivers were flowing below the danger level in 13 points, while above the danger mark at three other points on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, the local administration has been continuously distributing relief materials in the worst-affected areas since the flood began.

More than 925,000 people of around 223,000 flood-affected families in different districts of the division have, so far, received relief materials to overcome their livelihood related hardships caused by the natural disaster.

The government, as part of its instant humanitarian assistance to cope with the catastrophic situation, has allocated 1,841.1 tons of rice, Tk45.35 lakh in cash, 22,803 packets of dry-food, Tk27 lakh for baby food and Tk36 lakh for animal feed.

Moinul Islam, additional commissioner of Rajshahi division, said distribution of the allocated relief materials among the affected families in the division is on final stage.

Apart from this, 2,098.6 tons of rice, Tk29.71 lakh, 2,177 packets of dry food, Tk2 lakh for baby food and Tk5 lakh for animal feed remain in stock for distribution, he said.

Simultaneously, the Department of Health has undertaken all possible measures to prevent any outbreak of water-borne diseases among the flood affected people amidst the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

Some 6,317 patients were reported to have suffered from various water-related diseases and 25 people died in flood related incidents, particularly drowning and snakebite since July 1, sources said.

Flooding improves in Korotoa, Ghaghot basins

The officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) sources said, the water level of the Karotoa River decreased by 18cm during the period and the Ghaghot decreased by 2cm in the last 24 hours ending 9am Monday.

In spite of fall in the water level of the rivers, the Karotoa is flowing 88cm above its danger level at Katakhali Bridge point near to Gobindaganj upazila and the Ghaghot is flowing just below the danger level at New Bridge Road point of the district town on Monday morning.

Two unions including Kishoregari and Hossainpur have been flooded and many of the people of the unions have been marooned creating untold sufferings.

On the other hand, a total of 13 out of 17 unions have been submerged and over 50,000 people have been marooned.

The upazila complex, the upazila health complex and other important offices of the upazila town including the roads of the upazila town went under knee deep water.

The fishes of 250 ponds have also been washed away due to flood making the fish farmers particularly the youths more worried about the payment of loan taken from the banks.

District Fisheries Officer Abdut Dayan Dulu said fishes worth about Tk1.20 crore have been washed away due to current inundation.

Deputy Director of the Department Of Agricultural Extension Md Masudur Rahman said 13,500 hectors of T-Aman paddy land have already gone under flood water.

If the transplanted seedlings of Aman paddy remained under flood water for 8 to 10 days the seedlings would be damaged, he also said.

Gobindaganj upazila Project Implementation Officer Md Zahirul Islam said the relief materials including dried food were distributed to 3900 flood affected people of the upazila so far.

On the other hand, a total of one thousand flood affected people of Palashbari upazila got reliefs from the upazila administration, he also said.

Local lawmaker Umme Kulsum Smrity and Deputy Commissioner Abdul Matin recently visited the flood affected areas of Palashbari upazila and inquired about the condition of the flood victims and distributed relief materials among them.
