Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Monday said that the ruling Awami League-led government cannot deny the responsibility of various incidents of violence against women, including rape.

Quader, also the Awami League general secretary, came up with the remarks during a press conference at his ministry.

Responding to a question from the media, Quader said: "There have been reports of rape and violence against women in different parts of the country in recent times. We cannot avoid the responsibility for this.”

“How can the government avoid responsibility when it’s in power?”

Stating that the government is bringing those involved in such crimes to justice and they are being punished, he said: “Yet, this crime is happening at some places. Recently, incidents like rape have grown in our neighbouring countries too.”

“As the ruling party, we are taking firm action against each and every incident. We are not even sparing our party activists,” he added.

According to UNB, the minister also called upon all to forge a united resistance against rape incidents and violence against women.

“Rape is undoubtedly a heinous crime and a social disorder. Those who’re involved in such evil deeds are guilty of perverted taste,” he said.

Quader said that there is no need to politicize all issues. “To prevent such crimes, it’s necessary to build social resistance.”

The minister urged people to cooperate with the government in bringing criminals under the ambit of law without pampering them.
