Jute mills will be turned into profitable enterprises

State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Mannujan Sufian has said the government would bring all the state-run closed jute mills into production as soon as possible and urged the jute mill workers not to become confused.

“State-owned jute mills have not been closed permanently, rather production of those mills have been stopped temporarily, the mills will be brought back into production as soon as possible,” she said on Monday.

The state minister was speaking as the chief guest at a virtual views exchange meeting on the overall situation of state-owned jute mills in Khulna region, which were temporarily closed, a press release said.

Presided over by Director of Labour Directorate, Khulna M Mizanur Rahman, the meeting was attended by Khulna City Corporation Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleq and Additional Deputy Commissioner M Yusuf Ali, among others.

The state minister said the government must keep the state-owned jute mills open to bring back the golden fibre tradition and maintain balance in business sector, considering the state of jute farmers.

Jute mills will be turned into profitable enterprises by installing GTZ, PPP and bringing leasing management in the jute mills, she said, adding if mills are opened, skilled workers will get jobs there on priority basis.

On July 2, the decision to close all state run jute mills was taken at a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban.

The mills closed with immediate effect.

Numerous protests by jute mill workers followed, including the demand for arrears and the staging of a protest in this regard by blocking the Khulna- Jessore Highway in Khulna in September.
