However, police have rescued the woman who was forcibly picked up by the accused last week

An elderly man in Sunamganj was beaten with metal rods when he asked for his daughter's whereabouts to a local influential, who had allegedly been harassing his daughter for a long time.

The victim, Anwar Ali, 65, was assaulted by one Shamim and his gang members in Jagannathpur upazila on Monday.

Police on Tuesday rescued the woman from Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj.

The woman is in the process of filing a case against five people in Jagannathpur police station.

Police have arrested Liton, Akka, Ilak and Shah Alom in connection with the assault and have been interrogating them, confirmed Jagannathpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Musleh Uddin.

They will be produced in court on Wednesday.

OC Musleh said Shamim, who is still on the run, is involved in different crimes.

Anwar Ali said: "My daughter is a mother of one and got divorced two years ago. After her divorce she came back home. Local criminal Shamim has been harassing my daughter since then.”

"On September 30, Shamim and his men picked my daughter up from a house in Habiganj's Nabiganj upazila, where she worked as a house help. As Shamim had been harassing my daughter for long, I informed the matter to the Union Parishad chairman and a Union Parishad member but it had not brought any result."

"On Monday, Shamim and his men took me from my house and asked me about my daughter's whereabouts. I replied that how come they are asking this, as they themselves had abducted her," Anwar continued.

At one point Shamim and his men beat me with metals rods, Anwar added.

A video has spread on social media, which shows injury marks on Anwar's hands, back and legs.

When asked if any actions were taken for the harassment of Anwar’s daughter, Pailgaon Union Parishad Chairman Haji Md Mokhlus Mia said none had informed him that she was harassed.
