Noakhali gang rape: One more accused confesses at court

PBI visits the crime scene at Joykrishnapur village in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali where the woman was gang-raped after being stripped naked

One more accused in the double cases filed in connection with the Noakhali woman gang rape has given his confessional statement at court  on Saturday evening.

The accused Mainuddin Sahed has given his confessional statement under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, after he had been on remand for two days.

General Recording Officer (GRO) Md Sohel Rana at Noakhali Judicial Magistrate's Court confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune

With Mainuddin, so far five of the accused have given their confessional statement in front of the court.

Meanwhile members of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) on Saturday visited the crime scene at Joykrishnapur village in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali where the woman was gang-raped after being stripped naked.

The PBI team accompanying three accused-Badal, Kalam and Saju- reached the house of the rape survivor at around 10am.

PBI SP Mizanur Rahman said PBI inspector Mamunur Rashid Patwary is investigating the case filed under the Women and Children Repression (Prevention) Act while another PBI Inspector Mostafizur Rahman is investigating the case filed under the Pornography Control Act.

“The investigation officers of the cases accompanying three accused visited the house of the rape survivor on Saturday morning,” he added.

The investigation officers along with high officials of PBI inspected the house and its adjacent areas thoroughly for about 20 minutes ; however, they did not speak to anyone.

Earlier on Thursday, the two cases filed in connection with the torture and the gang-rape of a woman in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali were transferred to Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) for further enquiry.

The cases were handed over to PBI as per the directive of police headquarters, said M Alamgir Hossain, superintendent of Noakhali police.

On September 2, a criminal gang forced their way into the woman’s house, tied up her husband in the next room. They stripped the woman naked, beat her up, raped her using an object and video recorded the whole thing – which later went viral on social media on Sunday (October 4).

Subsequently, the rape survivor filed the two cases case with Begumganj police station.

A total of 11 people have so far been arrested in connection with the incident.
