Update : 12 Oct 2020, 12:27 AM

A journalist of a local newspaper in Narayanganj has been hacked to death by unidentified miscreants reportedly over previous animosity.

The deceased was identified as Md Iliyas Hossain, 45, son of Majibor Miah of Jiodhara of Bandar upazila and correspondent of Daily Bijoy, confirmed Bandar police station Officer-in-Charge Fakhruddin Bhuiyan.

Locals found Iliyas’s blood soaked body on the street in the Adampur area of Bandar upazila around 8pm on Sunday. They then took him to Narayanganj General Hospital where the duty doctor declared him dead, confirmed Dr Goulam Mostafa of the hospital.

OC Fakruddin said: “We have detained a youth for questioning over the matter. The identities of the perpetrators and the reason behind the murder are still unknown.”

Family members of the deceased claimed Iliyas had been killed by brothers Tushar and Turjoy, sons of the late Jaman Miah.

The family allege that the brothers are involved in providing illegal gas connections and drug dealing. Iliyas had been writing about their illicit activities, which landed them in jail.

The brothers had recently been released on bail and they took the opportunity to have Iliyas killed, Iliyas’s family said.
