A student of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science & Technology University (BSMRSTU) and her family have received rape threats reportedly from a Bangladesh Chhatra League man in Gopalganj.

The BSMRSTU student filed a general diary with Magura Sadar police station on Tuesday.

In the statement, she claimed she received several offensive rape threats from a Facebook account carrying the name of Hasan Al Mamun in the early hours of Tuesday.

The girl said she was actively protesting the recent rapes in Bangladesh in solidarity with the current movement going on around the country. It might have infuriated the accused.

In the messages that he sent via messenger app, Hasan claimed he was a follower of Magura Chhatra League General Secretary Ali Hossain Mukta and could cause harm to the student and her family in seconds.

He also named an AL activist named Jahangir Alam and made threats of gang-raping her along with her family members, the case statement says.

However, Ali Hossain Mukta and Jahangir both denied knowing such a person and said that they had filed a GD against the accused for damaging their goodwill.

Confirming the incident, Dr Rajiur Rahman, proctor of the university, said: “We will take legal action if the student files an official complaint. We are taking the incident as a top priority and will support her in every way possible.”
