Police arrested local Awami League leader Barkal Hossain in connection with the incident

Police on Friday arrested a man for reportedly raping a woman through blackmailing her by threatening to release her private photos over the internet.

The arrested Barkal Hossain is a leader of Barkal upazila unit Awami League.

The incident of rape took place in a hotel of Rangamati town on Thursday.

Confirming the arrest, Rangamati Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge Md Kabir Hossain on Friday night said: "The woman is preparing to file a case in this regard. We will take legal actions after that."

The woman said to journalists: "Over the past six years, Alamgir had gotten physically intimate with me promising marriage. Also sometimes he threatened me in various ways for sexual intimacy. He recorded footage of our private moments without my knowledge and demanded Tk1 lakh for his business.

"After he threatened to spread our photos and videos, I went to the hotel on Thursday where he raped me. Police arrested Alamgir after my family informed law enforcers of the matter.

"For him already my marriage was broken. On several occasions he sexually harassed me," the woman claimed.
