Custodial death of Rayhan: Constable Titu remanded

Titu Chandra Das, a constable of Bandarbazar police outpost, has been remanded for five days in a case filed over the death of Rayhan Ahmed in police custody in Sylhet.

The court of Sylhet Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ziadur Rahman passed the order on Tuesday after Muhidur Rahman, PBI inspector and the investigation officer of the case, produced the accused before the court with a seven day remand prayer.

Ayub Ali, a bench assistant (peshkar) of the court confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

Earlier, members of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) produced Titu who was shown arrested in the case, before the court at around 3pm.

On Monday, three policemen of Bandarbazar Police outpost testified before the same court in connection with the death of Rayhan in police custody. 

The police constables Delwar, Saidur, and Shamim testified under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Meanwhile, a three-member committee was formed on Monday to identify individuals who helped sub-inspector (SI) Akbar Buiyan to flee the country, according to Police Headquarters AIG (Media) Md Sohel Rana.

Rayhan, 34, a resident of Akharia in Sylhet city, was beaten to death in police custody at the Bandarbazar police outpost on October 11, his family said.

Rayhan’s wife Tahmina Akter Tanni filed a case at Kotwali police station on October 12 accusing a number of unidentified people.

Four police officers were suspended and three others withdrawn from duty in Sylhet following the death.

The seven officers are sub-inspector (SI) Akbar Bhuiyan, the in-charge of the city’s Bandarbazar police outpost, assistant sub-inspectors (ASI) Touhid Mia, Ashik Elahi and Kutub Ali, and constables Titu Chandra Das, Harunur Rashid and Shajib Hossain.

PBI is currently investigating the case at the instructions of the police headquarters.
