Youths have been selling their motorbike and three-wheelers for half price for gambling money, Municipal Mayor Nijam says
In order to prevent gambling in Feni's Parshuram upazila during the Indian Premier League, the local authorities have decided to halt cable TV services there.
Cable TV services were suspended on Thursday evening during an IPL match and it would be continued, said Nijam Uddin Chowdhury Shajel, mayor of Parshuram municipality.
Moreover, the speed of broadband internet services will be lowered during the matches.
"Thousands of youth gamble during IPL matches. The decision has been made after many families complained to us about the matter.
"We have even received complaints that to get money for gambling, youths have been selling their motorbike and three-wheelers for half price. Vigilance has been increased on behalf of the municipal authorities to inspect, if the decision is being adequately implemented, Nijam added.
Parshuram Upazila Nirbahi Officer Yasmin Akhter said they were verbally notified of the matter and there was no official instruction to implement the suspension of cable services.
The 2020 Indian Premier League (IPL) started on September 19 and will end on November 10. The matches are being played in the UAE this year, according to media reports.
