"The victim died suffering from cardiac disease," say police
A worker of a Gazipur garment factory died undergoing treatment at a hospital on Saturday after he was initially denied emergency medical leave during his work hour in the factory.
Mofidul Islam, 32, an worker of the Jim & Jessi Composite Limited factory, died at the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital around 12pm on Saturday.
"Mofidul died suffering from cardiac disease," said Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bason police station quoting the on-duty dioctor of the hospital.
Around 4:30pm on Thursday, Mofidul’s co-workers blocked the Dhaka by-pass road located nearby the factory and demanded punishment for people responsible behind the death of Mofidul.
However, the strike was called off after about an hour when police arranged a meeting between workers and the factory authorities, said Inspector Golam Hossain from Gazipur industrial police.
According to colleagues of the victim, a few while after Mofidul started his shift around 8am on Saturday, he felt chest and stomach pain. Mofidul’s line manager denied him a leave and recommended first aid in the factory's health centre, when Mofidul disclosed his condition.
As Mofidul's condition did not improve within an hour, he was allowed exit through the factory's gate. He initially went to his home and the owner of his house admitted him to the hospital.
After Mofidul died, his colleagues alleged that negligence of the factory authorities delayed his treatment and ultimately led to his death.
