'Police members had to face legal action whenever and wherever they had done something wrong or broken discipline'

The prime accused in the murder case of Rayhan- who was tortured to death in police custody in Sylhet- has been identified and the accused will be arrested soon, said Home Minster Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.

The minister came up with the comment in Tangail on Saturday while paying a visit to the grave of Dr Mohammad Matiur Rahman, a renowned cardiac surgeon and an Awami League lawmaker from Tangail-3 (Ghatail) constituency.

Kamal said: “Police are always with the people. They work by taking common people with them. Police have been able to gain the trust of people. Police came forward, not only at the time of tackling the Covid-19 crisis, but also for all kinds of disasters.

“Police members had to face legal action whenever and wherever they had done something wrong or broken discipline. We will not spare anyone who will create anarchy,” he added.

On October 11, Rayhan Ahmed, 34, a resident of Akharia in Sylhet city, was beaten to death in police custody, said the family of the victim.

His wife Tahmina Akter Tanni filed a case with Kotwali police station the following day accusing a number of unidentified people.

Besides, the authorities on October 12 suspended four policemen, including the in-charge of Bandarbazar police outpost sub-inspector Akbar Hossain, in connection with the death of a man “in police custody” in Sylhet.

Three policemen have been withdrawn from this connection on the same day.

Police initially rejected the allegation and said Rayhan was caught by locals of Kastghar area during a robbery and was lynched.

Ultimately, the case was transferred to the Police Bureau of Investigation.
