A Rohingya boy has been killed in a landmine explosion in Bandarban near the border region with Myanmar.
The incident took place near the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) pillar 40, opposite the Reju Amtali area around 8:00pm on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Md Jober, 13, son of Md Emdad Hossain of Kutupalong Rohingya camp.
Naikhongchhari police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Alamgir Hossain confirmed the matter on Saturday.
According to local residents and police, a group of Rohingya men went inside Myanmar territory near Naikhongchhari border to catch fish on Friday afternoon.
The mine exploded when they were returning to Bangladesh in the evening, killing the Rohingya boy on the spot.
Both legs of theboy were torn apart by the landmine explosion. The body was recovered, added Alamgir Hossain. “We will take legal action in this regard,” he added.
The news of the death came amid concerns by different international organizations, including Amnesty International, over reported landmine planting by the Myanmar authorities along the border, breaching international laws.
Earlier, September 23, another Rohingya man named Abdul Mojid was killed in a landmine explosion near Ghumdhum union of Naikhongchhari in Bandarban.
