Local police, union parishad member and chairman accused of negligence in probe report

The husband of the victim was involved in the Noakhali gang rape incident, according to a probe report.

A two-member committee formed to probe the incident submitted its findings to the High Court bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim on Thursday, said Deputy Attorney General Nowroz Russell Chowdhury.

As per the probe body’s findings, the victim’s husband and his elder brother were involved in the incident, he said.

The bench ordered the constitution of the committee on October 5 after it noticed the viral video of the gang rape. November 9 has been fixed for the next hearing on the report, the deputy attorney general added.

Furthermore, local police, the union parishad member and the chairman were accused of negligence over the incident in the report. Action against all people concerned was also recommended.

The incident

On September 2, a criminal gang forced its way into a woman’s house in Joykrishnapur village under Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila. They tied up her husband in a room and tried to rape her.

When she tried to defend herself, they stripped her naked, beat her up, violated her, and video-recorded the whole thing.

The video later went viral on social media and sparked widespread public outrage.

The rape survivor filed two cases with Begumganj police station after the video went viral. The two cases were later transferred to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
