Public health specialists have warned against the lackadaisical attitude of people in getting tested or staying away from tests

Although the mortality rate due to the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) is showing a declining trend in Chittagong, the number of cases has crossed the 21,000 mark in the last 24 hours.

Public health specialists have warned against the lackadaisical attitude of people in getting tested or staying away from tests.

Dr Shakeel Ahmed, in-charge of the microbiology laboratory at the Bangladesh Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases (BITID), told Dhaka Tribune, “During the onslaught of Covid-19 in the country, we used to test 300-400 samples each day. But now we are testing only 100-150 samples,” said Dr Ahmed.

“Most people have got over their initial fears of Covid-19 but the number of infections may rise again due to the lax attitude towards the infectious disease. We will have to abide by health regulations until the viral disease is eliminated from the country,” Dr Ahmed added.

Dr Ashim Kumar Nath, Superintendent of Chittagong General Hospital, told Dhaka Tribune that the coronavirus situation had been improving in Chittagong in terms of the mortality rate.

“When we began providing treatment at the facility during the outbreak of the disease, the admission rate of patients was 85 percent. Now it has come down to only 20 percent. People used to come to hospitals after being diagnosed with Covid-19. Now people prefer to remain at home and come to hospitals when conditions deteriorate,” said Dr Nath.

“The fear of catching the viral infection, which was there in the minds of people before, has weaned off as they step out. The situation may worsen with the onset of winter,” he warned.

Dr Bidduth Barua, chief initiator of Chittagong Field Hospital, told Dhaka Tribune that the infection rate from the viral disease was declining in Chittagong.

“The initial panic about coronavirus is no longer found among people. The tendency of wearing protective masks in public places has also decreased. We have to be more careful as viral diseases break out in winter,” said the public health specialist.
