Shahidunnabi Jewel, who was lynched for allegedly hurting religious sentiment on Thursday, was well-known as a meritorious and religious man, locals say

Abu Yunus Md Shahidunnabi Jewel, the man who was barbarically lynched in Lalmonirhat on Thursday, supposedly for hurting religious sentiment, had been mentally unstable for a year, locals who knew him said.

He was well-known as a meritorious student and a religious man, several individuals told Dhaka Tribune on Friday.

They said Jewel was a student of Rangpur Zilla School. He graduated with a first class in library science from Dhaka University and worked as the chief librarian at Rangpur Cantonment Public School and College.

A year ago, he lost his job; since then, he had reportedly been mentally disturbed.

On Thursday evening, Jewel, 50, was beaten to death by an angry mob on Burimari Union Parishad premises in Patgram upazila, Lalmonirhat.

The mob then took his body to Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway and set it on fire.

People from all walks of life in Rangpur staged a protest at Payra Chattar in Rangpur city on Friday, demanding that the people involved in Jewel's murder be soon identified, arrested and brought to justice.

Speaking during the demonstration, the protesters said it was common knowledge in the area that Jewel used to pray five times in the mosque.

“He was a dear person to everyone and was wrongly accused [of hurting religious sentiments]. The real mystery will come out if the incident is investigated,” one of the protesters said, requesting anonymity.

The protesters also demanded a judicial inquiry into Jewel's murder.

She also demanded a judicial inquiry into the lynching.

The Lalmonirhat district administration has formed a three-member probe body to investigate the incident.
