Members of the Border Guard Police (BGP) of Myanmar have allegedly picked up nine Bangladeshi fishermen from the Naf River in Teknaf upazila, Cox’s Bazar.

The identities of the fishermen have not been confirmed yet, but all of them are from Shah Porir Dwip, officials of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said quoting local sources.

The fishermen went to catch fish in the river on Tuesday morning, local union parishad member Md Nurul Amin said.

The boat broke down and was floating in the river, when a team of BGP picked them up and took them to Myanmar’s Hassurata Border checkpoint, Amin added.

Confirming the incident, Lt Col Mohammed Faisal Hasan Khan, commander of BGB Camp 2 in Teknaf, said: “We are contacting the BGP officials. We hope to get the fishermen back soon.”
