Speakers have said that waterlogging is the main obstacle to the development of Chittagong and the perennial problem could be resolved through proper planning.

They made the remarks during a draft report-sharing workshop titled “Economic Impact of Waterlogging on Local Trade: The Case Study of Khatunganj Wholesale Commodity Market, Chittagong.”

The workshop was organized at the Bangabandhu Conference Hall of the World Trade Centre in Chittagong on Sunday.

It aimed to seek the opinions of the stakeholders on the primary report of a study conducted to assess the economic losses due to waterlogging at the Khatunganj commodity hub.

With Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) President Mahbubul Alam in the chair, the workshop was addressed by Chief of Planning Commission Program Division Khandaker Ahsan Hossain, Project Director Dr Nurun Nahar, Prof Dr Khandaker Shabbir Ahmed, CCCI directors Ohid Siraj Chowdhury and Anjan Shekhar Das, Chief City Planner of Chittagong City Corporation AKM Rezaul Karim and organizing secretary of Khatunganj Trade and Industries Association Jamal Hossain, among others.

Speaking as the chief guest at the workshop, Khandaker Ahsan Hossain, said: “Research and study play an important role in resolving any problem.

“A study was carried out to ascertain the economic losses at Khatunganj due to waterlogging. The final report on the study will be prepared by December and it will be submitted to the authorities concerned.”

Echoing the same, CCCI President Mahbubul Alam said that the businesses of the age-old commodity hub have been incurring astronomical losses since 2004 due to water congestion.

He also underscored the need to undertake effective plans to revive the Chaktai Canal in order to ease waterlogging.

Recommendations of the CCCI president include regular dredging of the Karnaphuli River, excavation of canals, regular cleaning of sewage drains, construction of roads and walkways on both sides of the canals, and ensuring better coordination among the authorities concerned.
