The Kanthalbari Ghat on the Shimulia-Kanthalbari route is being shifted to Banglabazar in Madaripur district due to river management work on the Padma Bridge.
The shifting happened on Monday morning and the ferry service has already resumed, said Padma Bridge Executive Engineer (River Management) Md Sharful Islam Sarkar.
Two of the four ferry ghats were shifted to Banglabazar while the other two ghats will be shifted within the next two days. At least 12 ferries will run from Banglabazar Ghat on Monday, said Ahmed Ali, marine officer, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), Shimulia Ghat.
Meanwhile, BIWTC Shimulia Ghat Assistant General Manager (AGM) Md Shafiqul Islam said that the distance of the waterway has increased by 500m to 13km due to the relocation. Now it will take a little longer to reach the ferry destination.
