Tonu Murder: CID hands over case to PBI

None was arrested in connection with the murder yet

Update : 17 Nov 2020, 01:59 PM

The investigation responsibility of the murder case of Comilla Victoria College student Sohagi Jahan Tonu has been transferred to Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).

Confirming the matter on Tuesday, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Enamul Haque of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said the CID has transferred the Tonu murder case to PBI on October 21.

The gang rape and murder of theater activist Tonu inside Comilla Cantonment in March, 2016, led to outrage and mass protests across the country.

Although over four and a half years have passed since the murder case filed by Tonu’s father Yaar Hossain against unknown assailants, law enforcers failed to arrest anyone in this regard.

Tonu's Father Yaar Hossain said: "The case was in CID's hand for the past four years. On November 15, (Sunday) some PBI officers from Dhaka visited Comilla Cantonment and informed us that PBI has been investigating the case."

Tonu left home for tutoring at a house inside Comilla Cantonment on March 20 of 2016. She was later found dead behind a bush in the cantonment, not very far from home, according to her family.

After her father filed the case at Comilla's Kotwali police station it was initially transferred to the Detective Branch of police.

CID took the case in April of 2016, until it was shifted to PBI last month.

In May of 2017, CID informed the media of finding semen of three men, who reportedly raped her before murder. However, the progress in testing the samples was not disclosed.

CID has claimed to have interrogated more than 200 people, including some army men, but there has been no progress so far.
