The accused was identified as a local drunk
A drunk man has beaten a four-year-old boy to death with a brick in Gujaura Hasannagar village in Sunamganj.
The deceased was identified as Enamul Haque Musa (Talha), 4, son of Nurul Haque.
The incident took place on Friday afternoon. Locals captured the young man named Abdul Halim from the scene and handed him over to the police.
Halim hails from Moinpur village of Surma union in Sadar upazila.
The whole incident was captured on a CCTV camera next door.
According to police and the victim's family, the baby boy was playing in the yard on Friday afternoon.
At that time, the intoxicated youth Abdul Halim, who was passing by the road, first kicked the child and threw him on the ground. He then hit the child on the head with a brick at least five times.
The child's head was smashed and there was a lot of bleeding; the next door neighbours rescued the seriously injured child and rushed him to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital.
Later, as his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet.
When he was taken to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital the doctor on duty pronounced him dead.
Mostaq Hossain, cousin of the deceased, said that the child was playing in the yard of their auto rice mill when he was attacked by Abdul Halim.
His relative Shamsunnu also said that Halim remained intoxicated day and night. He used to attack anyone who opposed his behaviour.
The death of an innocent child cannot be accepted, he said.
Sunamganj Sadar model police OC Md Shahidur Rahman said: “The incident is very tragic. Can anyone kill a child like this? Locals captured a young man and handed him over to the police.
“He is being questioned but he is saying different things at different times. However, the incident was caught on a CCTV camera next door."
He also said: “The body of the deceased has been sent to the morgue of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College. An autopsy will be conducted on Sunday.”
