Police denies Awami League's claim that the incident took place while police were present
A Union Parishad (UP) member, who is also an Awami League leader, has been shot and hacked to death in the Ananta Bazar area in Pabna town on Friday.
The incident took place at 6pm when a chase and counter-chase occured between supporters of local influentials Mokhles and Bokul over establishing supremacy, said police.
The deceased has been identified as Bokul Sheikh, a member of ward no 7 of the union council, and joint general secretary of ward unit Awami League.
Confirming the party identity of the deceased, Advocate Abdul Ahad Babu, office secretary of Pabna District unit Awami League, said: "The Mokhles gang is notorious for their role in extorting money. They are involved in the politics of BNP and Jamaat.
"It is hard to accept that the incident occured while police were present,” said Babu, adding that he demands swift arrest and exemplary punishment for the people involved in the killing.
Pabna police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Nasim Ahmed denied that the murder took place when police were present and said reinforcement has been deployed in the area to prevent any further untoward situation.
