RU VC to seek answers from ministry
The Education Ministry has asked the authorities of Rajshahi University (RU) to suspend all recruitment activities until further notice.
The ministry also asked RU VC Prof M Abdus Sobhan to explain in seven working days why the appointments of his daughter and son-in-law as teachers of the institution should not be cancelled.
Furthermore, the ministry asked the RU VC to take necessary steps to remove the university’s Registrar Prof Abdul Bari from his post, for not properly assisting the University Grants Commission (UGC) committee probing allegations of irregularities at the university.
Separate letters signed by Nilima Afroz, senior assistant secretary at Govt General University, were issued in this regard.
The ministry decision follows the submission of a 36-page-long UGC probe report (with 700 pages of related documents) to the Education Ministry on October 21. According to the report, evidence of various irregularities by the VC and other senior officials of RU had been found.
The inquiry found that RU VC Prof Sobhan tweaked the recruitment policy of the university to appoint his daughter and son-in-law as teachers. A total of more than 30 under-qualified candidates were recruited as teachers under VC Abdus Sobhan’s administration.
The UGC probe body recommended that the authorities concerned take immediate action against the RU VC and others in order to stop such immoral activities, improve the overall learning and research environment at the university and protect its image and reputation.
Meanwhile, speaking to journalists on Tuesday, RU VC Prof M Abdus Sobhan, said: “The Education Ministry in a letter has asked us to suspend all recruitment activities at the university, but they didn’t state any reasons behind this decision. We will seek answers from the ministry regarding this and we will see how the issue can be resolved.”
When asked whether recruitment would be suspended for the time being, the VC said: "No, no. We just got the letter [regarding the suspension of recruitment activities]."
He refused to comment on the ministry recommendation to remove RU Registrar Prof Abdul Bari for not helping the UGC probe.
In January this year, more than 60 teachers of RU wrote to the PMO, UGC, Education Ministry, and ACC. In the letter, the teachers alleged the RU VC and Pro VC Choudhury M Zakaria were engaged in graft, nepotism, and various other irregularities.
The UGC opened the inquiry – which found evidence of 25 allegations against the VC and other senior officials – in August.
Sobhan, who became VC of the university on February 26, 2009, completed his first tenure on February 25, 2013. He was again appointed to the post on May 6, 2017, with his second tenure scheduled to end on May 6, 2021.
