NGO worker’s wrist severed by snatchers in Narsingdi

A Non-Government Organization (NGO) worker’s wrist was severed by snatchers in broad daylight in Narsingdi city.

The incident occurred in front of the Narsingdi Government Mahila College in West Kanda Para on Tuesday noon.

The victim, identified as Shanta Akhter, 31, works as a loan officer for NGO ASA.

According to the police and locals, Shanta was returning to her office in Bajir intersection on Tuesday noon after collecting loan installments from the West Kanda Para area. 

At one point, two snatchers blocked her way and tried to snatch away her bag. 

When Shanta resisted, the snatchers severed her left wrist with a cleaver and took away her mobile phone, tab, and Tk2 lakh. The unidentified snatchers then quickly fled the scene. 

Locals rescued Shanta and rushed her to the Narsingdi Sadar Hospital where on-duty doctors referred her to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation (Nitor) for better treatment.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Narsingdi Sadar model police station Officer-in-Charge Biplob Kumar Dutta Chowdhury, said: “We have visited the crime scene after being notified regarding the incident.” 

“CCTV footage has shown two snatchers fleeing the scene with Shanta’s bag.”

“Efforts are underway to arrest the culprits responsible for the incident,” the OC added.
