Police have arrested a youth of Nilphamari for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) on social media platform Facebook.
A team of Dimla police apprehended Akash Roy Nirab, 23, at Savar in Dhaka on Sunday evening, said Dimla police station Officer-in-Charge Sirajul Islam.
The youth will be produced before a court on Monday, he said.
Nirab, a resident of Goyabari village in the upazila, posted derogatory remarks about the prophet through his Facebook account on Saturday, he said.
As the post went viral, a tense situation was created in the village where agitated locals demanded his arrest and punishment.
Being informed, Dimla Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Jayasri Rani Roy, Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (Domar circle) Joybrata Pal, and other police officials went to the spot.
They pacified the people by giving assurance that the youth will be arrested and brought to book, the OC added.
A case was filed in this regard on Sunday night.
