The strike will continue until the police submit an investigation report over the untoward incident at the Jamalpur General Hospital on December 25, said a hospital official

Doctors of all government and private hospitals and clinics in Jamalpur have gone on a strike depriving numerous people of medical services in the district.

Monowara Begum, a resident of Daripara in Jamalpur city, who came with her daughter to Jamalpur General Hospital on Tuesday, had to return home due to the absence of treatment facilities at the hospital’s outpatient department.

Speaking to reporters on her way back home, Shilpi Begum of Sardarpara area of the city said: “I don't know when the doctor will return at Jamalpur General Hospital. I am in need of kidney surgery. We can't go on like this. When will this strike end?”

Besides, hundreds of patients from remote areas are also being deprived of treatment in the district. Patients admitted to the in-patient department are reportedly being forced to leave. Although nominal medical services are provided in the emergency department, there are no patients in the inpatient department.

Speaking on the issue, Mahfuzur Rahman Sohan, assistant director of Jamalpur General Hospital, said emergency and inpatient department services are available to patients.

He said the strike would continue until the police submitted an investigation report over the untoward incident at the Jamalpur General Hospital on December 25.

Doctors of Jamalpur are currently in agitation demanding the withdrawal of the Jamalpur Sadar Police OC and punishment of those who broke into the Jamalpur General Hospital on December 25 and assaulted doctors over the death of a female patient at the hospital.

Meanwhile, friends and family of the deceased patient on Tuesday protested the death due to doctors’ negligence, assault on the patient’s relatives and false lawsuits.
