Two accused arrested

A case has been filed against seven people, including an imam of a local mosque, for raping a widow in Raninagar upazila of Naogaon.

The rape survivor, 40, filed the case with Raninagar police station on Sunday night and the law enforcers apprehended two people in this connection.

Locals said 50-year-old Jakirul Islam Jakir, a resident of Gohelapur Boria village in the upazila, was the imam of a local mosque.

He proposed marriage to the widow about two years ago, but she refused.

On November 10 last year, Jakir went to the house of the woman, raped and promised her to marry.

Four days later, Jakir went to her house again when she gave him pressure to marry her. But, Jakir beat her up and said he would not do so.

The woman, however, informed the matter to local influential people, including Jamal Hossain and Afir Uddin.

They arranged arbitration on January 4 this year to cover up the incident when Jakir was fined Tk1.20 lakh.

Later on, the influential people pressurized the widow not to tell anyone about the incident without giving any money.

Raninagar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahin Akand said the woman filed the lawsuit citing names of three accused -- Jakir, Jamal and Afir.

"We arrested Jamal and Afir on Sunday night. They were produced before a court on Monday and sent to jail.

"Drives are on to arrest the other accused," he added.
