The victim and her mother told the court that the accused is innocent and they do not want to drop the charges against him
A Bogra court on Sunday granted bail to Tufan Sarkar – expelled Jatiya Sramik League leader of Bogra – in the case filed for abducting and raping a female student and torturing her mother back in 2017.
Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge AKM Fazlul Haque delivered the order after the victim and her mother – who had filed the case against Tufan – told the court that the accused is innocent and want to drop the charges against him in this regard.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Special Public Prosecutor Naresh Mukherjee, said: “I had opposed the bail order.”
Contacted, SM Mohiuddin Haider, jailer of Bagerhat District Jail, said: “However, Tufan will not get out of the jail so easily as he has five other cases filed against him, including murder charges.”
Earlier on June 22, last year, the High Court had denied bail to Tufan in this case.
The bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain passed the order after a virtual hearing on the bail petition filed by the principal accused and asked him to file a petition with the regular bench.
Advocate Momtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehedi and AHM Rehanul Kabir joined the hearing for Tufan, while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Deputy Attorney General Md Bashir Ullah represented the state.
According to the case filed on July 28, 2017, Tufan took the girl to his house in Badurtala of Bogra town, promising to arrange her admission to a local college, and raped her there on July 17 that year.
When Tufan's wife and her elder sister came to know about the incident, they and some associates picked up the girl and her mother from their house.
They allegedly beat the girl and her mother with sticks and cut their hair. At one stage, the offenders had a barber shave their heads.
Later, two cases were filed in this connection.
On October 10 last year, police pressed charges against 13 people –Tufan, his wife Tasmin Rahman alias Asa Sarkar, and his sister-in-law, Bogra municipality councillor Marzia Hasan Rumki, Lovely Rahman Rumi, Munna, Atiqur Rahman Atiq, Ali Ajam Depu, Emarat Alam Khan, Jitu Miah, Samiul Haque Shimul, Mehedi Hasan Rupom, Jaminur Rahman Runu, Jibon Robidas Jatin and Anjuara Begum.
On January 22, 2019, the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal also rejected Tufan's bail plea.
The High Court also rejected another bail petition filed by Tufan on February 28 last year.
