As of January 19, the EC had received as many as 45 electoral complaints

Mayoral and councilor candidates for the elections to the Chittagong City Corporation have been lodging a huge number of complaints against each other at the Election Commission (EC) in the last many days.

As of January 19, the EC had received as many as 45 electoral complaints.

Most of the complaints were lodged on obstruction of electoral campaigns.

The other complaints were intimidation, death threats, assault, vandalizing vehicles used for electoral campaigns and tearing down electoral posters, banners and leaflets.

Of them, one complaint was lodged on January 10, three on January 11, five on January 12, two on January 13, six on January 14, one on January 15, seven on January 16, six on January 17, ten on January 18 and four complaints on January 19.

Of the total 45 complaints, the EC has disposed of only 19 complaints.

Of the complaints, nine complaints were lodged on behalf of BNP-backed mayoral candidate Dr Shahadat Hossain while only three complaints were disposed of by the EC.

On the other hand, two complaints were lodged on behalf of AL-backed mayoral M Rezaul Karim Chowdhury and one of them was disposed of by the EC.

The remaining 34 complaints were lodged by the councilor candidates for general and reserved seats.

Returning Officer Mohammad Hasanuzzaman said the EC was looking into the complaints with all seriousness and remained alert to avert any untoward incident centering on the polls.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Saleh Md Tanvir said the law enforcers had beefed up vigilance so that law and order did not deteriorate during the polls.

“The EC should dispose of the complaints lodged by the candidates for the sake of ensuring a free, fair and participatory election,” said Advocate Akhtar Kabir Chowdhury, president of the Chittagong city unit of Shacheton Nagorik Committee under Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB).

This time seven mayoral candidates and 172 councilor candidates for 40 general wards and 57 councilors for the reserved seat for women have entered the electoral contest.
