Jafar Iqbal Sharif reportedly hanged himself in his room

An Indian youth has reportedly commited suicide inside the student hostel of the Barind Medical College in Rajshahi.

He was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his room by other students around 8:30pm on Friday, said police and college officials.

The deceased was identified as Jafar Iqbal Sharif, 24, a fifth-year MBBS student of the private college and son of Muzammel Hossain Pintu of West Bengal, India.

Chandrima police station OC Shirajum Munir said they were informed about the incident. “We are looking into it. The body has been recovered and sent to the morgue of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for autopsy.”

Barind Medical College Principal Dr BK Dam said Iqbal has been staying in India due to the Covid-19 lockdown and travel restrictions. He recently came to Bangladesh and stayed in his friend’s house in Dhaka for a while.

Iqbal arrived in Rajshahi last Wednesday and has been staying in his room at the foreign students’ hostel since then.

Dr Dam said some other students found Iqbal hanging in his room on Friday evening. They took him to the emergency department of Barind Medical College Hospital, but the duty doctor declared him dead.

The principal said that Iqbal had mental health issues and he was even taken to the doctor twice in the past.

Iqbal’s uncle in India and the Rajshahi office of the assistant high commissioner of India were informed of the incident, he added.
