18,000 law enforcers to remain deployed

The premier port city has been brought under a tight security blanket as the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) goes to polls on Wednesday.

While speaking at a press briefing at the Dampara Police Lines on Tuesday, Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Saleh Md Tanvir said 417 polling centres out of total 735 centres had been identified as important [risky].

“These polling centres have been marked as important due to their geographical locations, intelligence and previous history of violence. More than 18,000 law enforcers, including 9,000 police personnel, will remain deployed across the city to prevent any untoward incident. Besides, 25 platoons of Rapid Action Battalion and 25 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh will remain on duty,” said the CMP Commissioner.

“We have started sending police forces to the polling centres. Two patrol teams will remain on duty in each ward of the city. Moreover, each police station will have a strike force. In addition, police will remain on stand-by at Dampara and Monsurabad police lines,” said the CMP Commissioner, adding that six police personnel would remain deployed at the important [risky] polling centres.

The CMP Commissioner also urged all to carry their NIDs.
