A leaked telephonic conversation between the duo, attesting to the fact, has already gone viral in social media
Amid a series of allegations against him, Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah has stirred yet another controversy.
This time around, he cancelled the appointment of a teacher of the university's Department of Accounting and Information System as its head, for reportedly not joining him in a photo session at BRUR's liaison office in Dhaka recently.
A leaked telephonic conversation between the duo, attesting to the fact, has already gone viral in social media.
In the conversation on Saturday, the vice chancellor was heard asking Omar Faruque, the teacher, to meet him in Dhaka, to collect his appointment letter as the head of the department through a photo session at the liaison office on Sunday.
But Faruque refused to go to Dhaka and after that, the VC replaced him with Md Amir Shrif.
During the conversation, Faruque repeatedly asked why he would go to Dhaka to collect his appointment letter when VC has his own office at the university campus.
When contacted, Omar Faruque said he was embarrassed over the incident.
However, he argued that he was top on the list of candidates for the post and did not know why his appointment was cancelled as the head of the department.
Two teachers of the same department, preferring anonymity, said Amir Shrif previously served at the same post.
According to the university rules, a teacher can be the head of the department for three years and gets replaced by someone else once his or her tenure expires.
Attesting to Faruque's claim, they said he was the top choice for the post in the latest appointment process.
Also, Shrif was supposed to be reappointed after five of his colleagues served as the departmental head, one after another.
The two teachers termed the cancellation of Faruque's appointment regretful.
Dhaka Tribune repeatedly tried to reach the VC over the phone, but could not.
Mashiur Rahman, general secretary of Bangabandhu Teachers' Council, said VC Kalimullah acted like a dictator and committed irregularities through the controversial appointment.
"He is engaged in a recruitment trade from the liaison office," Mashiur said.
Dr Matiur Rahman, convener of the BRUR Teachers' Protection Council, said as the VC's tenure will end soon, he has started to rampantly increase the irregularities he has been doing.
Dr Tuhin Wadud, former president of the BRUR Teachers' Association, said the VC has been detached from the university campus.
VC Kalimullah is not conforming to any of the university rules, thus, taking decisions whimsically, he added.
