Police arrested three suspects - Labu Mia, Ashraful Islam and Omar Faruq - soon after a case was filed over the gang rape, reports Bangla Tribune
A teenage girl has been gang-raped by three men in Dinajpur, while a six-year-old child has been raped in Narsingdi.
The gang rape incident took place around 3am on Saturday. The victim, a 10th grader, was sent to M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital in Dinajpur in critical condition.
Police arrested three suspects - Labu Mia, Ashraful Islam and Omar Faruq - soon after a case was filed over the gang rape, reports Bangla Tribune. Labu has been named as the prime accused in the case for allegedly masterminding the crime.
According to the case statement, the survivor had entered into a relationship with a boy named Raju nearly one and a half years ago. She would often speak with Raju by phone and Labu found out about this at some point.
Subsequently, Labu obtained the teenage girl’s phone number and contacted her while impersonating Raju. They agreed to meet at a garden near the survivor’s house in the Ghoraghat municipality area in the early hours of Saturday.
When the teenager arrived and realized she had been tricked, she tried to flee the scene. However, Labu and his two associates caught and forced themselves on her in turns.
The girl’s mother found her bleeding and unconscious body in the garden in the morning.
Goraghat police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Azim Uddin said they arrested the three accused from different parts of the district.
“They were sent to a local court in the morning on Monday,” he said, adding that they were still verifying if Raju or someone else was also involved in the crime.
In Sadar upazila of Narsingdi, a construction worker raped a six-year-old girl by luring her with chocolates on Saturday afternoon, said Narsingdi Model police station OC Biplob Kumar Dutta.
The child is no longer in danger, he added.
Only accused Abdullah was detained after a case was filed over the incident late on Sunday night.
At least 1,000 child rapes and around 250 gang-rapes of women were reported across the country last year.
