According to the association, the district has a daily demand of 400,000 eggs and 30 tons of poultry meat, but it produces 25% more than current demand

An excess supply of poultry products that is outweighing current market demand is putting a strain on the owners, especially small and medium ones, according to the Khulna Poultry and Fish Feed Industry Owners Association.

The organisation fears a heavy blow to the sector if the market surplus lingers.

Owners say that when prices suddenly go up, it is not immediately possible to increase production, and vice versa. As a result, losses are inevitable.

In 10 districts under Khulna division, 35 million poultry birds are produced every week. The average cost of producing each chick is Tk15-20. For the past one week, the wholesale price for each chick has been as low as Tk4-5. On top of that, every week 20-25% of chicks remain unsold. As a result, at least 10 million chicks are being buried in the ground every week.

According to the association, the district has a daily demand of 400,000 eggs and 30 tons of poultry meat. But it produces 25% more than the present demand.

The organization now fears that the poultry industry of Khulna will incur heavy losses. It outlined the reasons, including a lack of government patronage, up-to-date policies and supervision of the departments concerned.

Poultry traders and farm owners say the cost of production for each egg is between Tk6-6.5, while the wholesale price is Tk4-5. Similarly, the cost of producing one kg of broiler chicken is Tk110-115, while the wholesale price is Tk90-100.

According to the sources, out of 10,557 poultry farms in the division, Khulna district has 4,952 small and large farms  followed by 1,986 in Kushtia, 1,012 in Jessore, 700 in Bagerhat, 700 in Jhenaidah, 555 in Satkhira, 450 in Magura, 555 in Meherpur, 352 in Chuadanga and 295 in Narail.

Sudham Mandal, a farmer in Khulna's Parbatiaghata village, said about 900 layer chickens died every two days due to a lack of demand. This has cost him Tk1.27 lakh this week.

Subhash Chandra Bose, a poultry farm owner in Dumuria upazila, said he had been selling broiler chickens at Tk88-90 per kg for the past week. “No one wants to buy chicken. We accept whatever price we can get.”

SM Sohrab Hossain, secretary general of the organisation, said: “The poultry sector is on the verge of collapse due to various crises, including lack of timely policies, slack facilities for livestock officials and lack of innovation.

Although poultry farmers have set a record in egg and meat production, he said, layer, broiler farmers and traders are in danger as there was no way to export eggs and meat in case of an excess supply.

Poultry traders have submitted a 15-point demand to the government to resolve the crisis. They say that if their demands are met, 40% of the existing issues faced by the industry can be addressed.
