Farmer beaten dead in Sherpur; 2 held

Afroza Akter, wife of Azim, was also injured while trying to save her husband

A farmer was beaten to death over a trivial matter in Bausha under Nokla upazila of Sherpur on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Azim Uddin, 50, a local of the area. Afroza Akter, wife of Azim, was also injured while trying to save her husband.

Mushfiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Nokla police station, said a goat gone astray destroyed Azim's chilli and betel nut plants.

An altercation ensued between the goat's owner Sajib Miya and Azim, and at one stage, Sajib along with others beat Azim mercilessly with sticks, leaving him dead on the spot.

On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body.

Police also arrested two alleged perpetrators' wives—Eti Begum, wife of Mizan Mia and Sikha Begum, wife of Ismail from the spot.
